SMS is used in India for various purposes by organizations. Some are transactional in nature, some are promotion in nature. The transactional SMS are important and used for sending OTP or any account related information. The promotional SMS are used for advertising from which you can opt out anytime you want. To tackle the menace of sending bulk SMS sending to users, DoT has made it compulsory to for companies to first get a SMS sender Id registered in their name. So that users should be able to know who really is sending them certain sms. This also prevents the possibility of fraud because same Sender Id can not be allocated to multiple organizations.
These SMS Sender Ids are usually made up of 6 characters and are alphanumeric in nature. The standard format is XY-ABCDEF where the initial 2 character (XY) prefix denotes the telecom operator and state used by the organization to send the SMS and the later 6 character (ABCDEF) represents the Sender Id. Any organization can use any of the telecom operators to send SMS hence the initial 2 characters (XY) will keep changing. CallTracer has compiled the complete database of SMS sender Ids so that you can search and get latest updated details.
The SMS Sender Ids are built on blockchain technology so that each operator is away of registrations being done on other operator to prevent duplication. The unique headers are shared across Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT). Anyone wanting to send any kind of promotional, transaction or service related SMS needs to get DLT approval beforehand.
